Preparing rock art sites for documentation

In week 18 (May 1 - May 8) the annual recognition week is planned. During this week the main objective is to re-locate the carvings and prepare them for the documentation during the workweek in week 30. It is an important step in the documentation process but unfortunately quite often so time-consuming that it is not possible to integrate this step in the workweek itself.

This first step in the documentation process is important because it gives us a better understanding of the chosen locations of the carvings and its position in the landscape. It teaches us to read the landscape.

The anticipation at the site and the thrill of (re)discovering the rockcarving that may have been covered with earth for 20 or 30 years is just as exciting. As with the workweek, the recognition week gives you the opportunity to see, feel and experience the beauty of the carvings up close. This year we will be mainly working in the Sotetorp area (cleaning and preparing), but most probably also on some sites in the Litsleby, Gerum and Krokholmen area, where still a few rocks need to be documented.
